ACDIS Physician Advisor Forum

Speakers

Amarin “Ty” Alexander, MD, MBA, MA, CHCQM-PHYADV, CPC-A, CIC, CRC, CPMA, CDIP, CDEI, CCS, CCDS, is a retired internal medicine–trained hospitalist. He is currently employed by a payer in the area of DRG validation. In addition to his board certification via ABIM, he is also credentialed with ABQAURP, AAPC, AHIMA, and ACDIS.

Kory Anderson, MD, FACP, CHCQM, has been a hospitalist with Intermountain Health for almost 17 years. He has held various leadership roles including lead hospitalist, department of medicine chair, and medical staff president. He's been involved in physician advisor work in 2012, with responsibilities in utilization review (UR), CDI, physician education, and appeals. He has served as the senior medical director of Intermountain's in-house physician advisor team since January 2020, growing the team to almost 40 physician advisors and nearly 100 CDI nurses, who continue to support work in UR, CDI, physician education, and appeals/peer-to-peer work. He also serves as Intermountain's senior medical director for hospital quality. He has helped lead various initiatives around financial and quality improvement, including Vizient top-decile performance and PINC AI's top health system recognitions, while integrating an eight-hospital health system into the physician advisor, CDI, and quality teams.

Beau Bailey, MD, CHCQM, FAAP, is an adult and pediatric hospitalist and physician advisor at Intermountain Health. During the early part of his career, Bailey was involved in hospital administration as hospitalist medical director, internal medicine department chair, regional inpatient executive council member, and geographic population health committee member. He also served as vice chair on the committee for safety, quality, and patient experience for the Intermountain Medical Group Board. In 2019, he decided to pursue new opportunities with Intermountain Physician Advisor Services. He has been involved in provider education, CDI, and utilization review, and is currently the physician lead for appeals and denials. His other roles include general inpatient hospice provider for Inspiration Hospice, regional clinical clerkship director for Rocky Vista University-SOM, and executive council member for the physician advisor special interest group of the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Susan Belley, M.Ed., RHIA, is the business manager of ambulatory services and compliance/audit services within the consulting services business of Solventum. She has more than 35 years of experience in the HIM field in acute care hospitals, where she spent a large part of her career managing coding and CDI departments. She currently works with customers to provide consulting, auditing, and outpatient CDI services related to coding and documentation in the facility and professional fee arenas. She is a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in HIM. She has a master’s degree in education and spent 20 years in the classroom teaching coding and related courses as an adjunct faculty member in the HIM program at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland. She holds a postgraduate certificate in healthcare corporate compliance from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and has delivered coding and CDI presentations for AHIMA, ACDIS, Becker’s, and similar organizations.

Alvin Gore, MD, is a board-certified family physician with extensive experience in physician advisor duties. Initially an associate director of a family medicine residency program, Gore has been working as a physician advisor since 2010. Currently he is a director for utilization management for Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. He is responsible for all aspects of the physician advisor role, including CDI/CDQI, utilization management second-level reviews, denial prevention and management, physician education and outreach, and various cost optimization and population health projects.

Audrey Howard, RHIA, is a senior consultant in compliance and audit services at Solventum. She has over 30 years of experience in HIM. During her professional career, she has served as a coder, DRG technician, coding supervisor, and assistant director at acute care facilities. As a consultant, she has worked with numerous facilities implementing documentation improvement programs. For the past nine years, she has functioned as an auditor related to reimbursement, compliance, and quality outcomes. She has authored numerous articles and blogs on coding-related topics in industry publications and has spoken on coding issues at national, regional, and state conferences. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in HIM.

Jeanne Johnson, MHA/INF, BSN, RN, CCDS, is a dedicated director of CDI and coding for Premier Health. Her CDI career began in 2013 with the initial implementation of the system’s community hospital CDI program. Since that time, she has taken on the role of system director for CDI and added the role of coding director in 2021. She has also served on the ACDIS Leadership Council since 2022 and participated in ACDIS Mastermind groups in 2022 and 2024. Johnson is a registered nurse who earned her master’s degree in healthcare administration and informatics. She is passionate about empowering healthcare teams through education and innovation, driving measurable improvements in care quality and organizational performance. She has joined with other CDI leaders across Ohio to restart the state’s ACDIS local chapter.

Trey La Charité, MD, FACP, SFHM, CCS, CCDS, is the medical director for CDI, coding, and utilization integrity at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. An ACDIS Advisory Board member, he has presented numerous times at the annual ACDIS national conference and ACDIS Physician Advisor Forum. He has written several books in the field of CDI that address physician advisor training, program management, and recovery auditor appeals. He has been a practicing hospitalist for over 20 years, is a clinical associate professor in the department of medicine, and is the curriculum director for their residency program’s hospitalist rotation. He has additional responsibilities spanning case management, utilization review, medical records, compliance, and performance improvement.

Samara Llewellyn, MD, MBA, has served as the senior physician executive for safety and quality at Novant Health since 2021. She is board certified in internal medicine and continues clinical practice in the acute care setting. She previously served for 10 years as medical director for an 80-provider hospitalist group. She obtained her medical degree from East Carolina University School of Medicine in 2003 and completed her residency in internal medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2006. After residency, she joined Novant Health as a hospitalist. In her current role, Llewellyn leads the clinical documentation excellence, clinical excellence, and accreditation and regulatory teams. She is passionate about helping clinical providers better understand the complexities of healthcare delivery.

Anjani Mahabashya, MD, CHCQM-PHYADV, is the medical director for utilization management at Geisinger Medical Center. She is also a past board member of the ACPA. A seasoned public speaker, Mahabashya has delivered two impactful TEDx talks and frequently presents on national platforms within her professional domains. Her exceptional volunteer work has been recognized with the prestigious Presidential Volunteer Service Award, which she has received three times.

Andrew Maigur, MD, CHCQM-PHYADV, CMPC, CCDS, is a physician leader specializing in utilization management, denials management, revenue integrity, integrated care management, and CDI, with over 10 years of clinical experience and eight years of executive leadership. He is a Certified Quality Assurance Professional (CQAP) and a member of several professional associations and councils in his field. As the system director of the physician advisor program at Premier Health, he leads and directs a team of 13 physician advisors who provide vital support and guidance for the health system's revenue cycle and quality outcomes. He has successfully built and trained the team, fostered collaboration across departments, and developed strategic solutions to common challenges. His passion is to bridge the gap between bedside clinicians and the revenue cycle, while putting the patient's best interest first.

Nina Meehan is an internationally recognized director, playwright, and producer and an innovation, creativity, and communication expert. She began her career as the CEO and founder of an award-winning, multimillion-dollar children’s entertainment company. An “explosion of positive energy,” today she works with leaders, teams, and organizations as a speaker, consultant, and facilitator to unleash their brilliance so they can move beyond ANY limit.

Meehan learned about breakthrough thinking through her work as a creative leader, developing immersive, interactive programming for a million people worldwide. Her work in musical theater includes a trailblazing musical based on Chelsea Clinton’s bestselling book, She Persisted; a zany adaptation of Press Here, the longest-running picture book on The New York Times bestseller list; and an adaption of Grumpy Monkey for the Tony award–winning Pasadena Playhouse.

A two-time TEDx speaker, she has spoken at places like Chicago Women in Tech, Wonder Women in Tech, the University of Utah, Northwestern University, the Entrepreneur’s Organization, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Visioni in Bologna, an international performing arts festival. Her work has been spotlighted in numerous publications including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and on ABC, NBC, and CBS News. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Theatre from Northwestern University and a Master of Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco, and is currently working toward her PhD in Creativity, Innovation, and Leadership.

Sansrita Nepal, MD, MBA, FACP, is a practicing hospitalist at Denver Health and an expert in physician and facility billing. In her role, she works closely with CDI, coding, compliance, and medical staff. With her business and medical background, she transformed her hospital's CDI-coding and coding-medical staff relationship, bringing these groups together. She is also passionate about physician burnout and well-being. She believes that giving physicians documentation/coding tips helps them become more efficient. She also works as a clinical advisor for Epic, allowing the creation of new tools in Epic to help CDI and the revenue cycle.

Robert Oubre, MD, is a hospitalist and the CDI medical director at St. Tammany Health System in Covington, Louisiana. He is a member of the CDI committee of the American College of Physician Advisors and has previously spoken at the National Physician Advisor Conference. Known as the "Doctor of Documentation," he has been a featured guest on podcasts and is the founder of The CDI and Coding Village online community. He is also an instructor of the all-intensive course on medical documentation through Case Western Reserve University.

Shirlivia Parker, MHA, RHIA, CDIP, has over two decades of experience in supporting the clinical and administrative operations of the mid-revenue cycle. Her areas of expertise include the integration of technology in healthcare settings, inpatient and outpatient CDI, population health initiatives, coding quality and auditing, denials management, and physician education and engagement. She is currently the president of compliance and education for mid-revenue cycle at Medovent Solutions. She is a past member of the ACDIS Leadership Council and was elected to the AHIMA Council of Excellence in Education for calendar years 2025–2028. She has contributed to numerous articles for ACDIS and AHIMA and spoken at national conferences, including for ACDIS, AHIMA, and ACMA.

Catherine Pesek Bird, DO, MBA, CHCQM-PHYADV, is a physician advisor at Lakeland Regional Health (LRH), a 910-bed, level 2 trauma center and teaching hospital with the second busiest emergency department in the country. Her areas of focus include utilization management, CDI, and quality measures, and she provides education in these areas in formal didactic settings, during rounds, and at the elbow as needed. Before coming to LRH, Pesek practiced as an academic cardiologist at a large Big 10 medical center, leading teams of fellows, residents, and medical students. She provided direct care to cardiac patients, including transplant recipients and pregnant patients with either acquired or congenital heart disease. She worked on quality improvement programs in heart failure, sepsis, cardiac catheterization, and medication adherence. Prior to medical school, Pesek taught high school chemistry. She has written a book on understanding and determining end-of-life medical choices and is a proud alumna of the University of Notre Dame.

Elisa Sninchak, MBA, M.Ed., BSN, RN, CCDS, CCS, CDIP, is the clinical documentation excellence director for Novant Heath, a large healthcare system based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She has 27 years of nursing experience, including 17 years of bedside care in a level 1 trauma setting, five years as CDI educator, two years as CDI manager, and three years as CDI director. Sninchak is a contributor for ACDIS publications and white papers. She co-founded the ACDIS educator networking chapter in 2017, co-leading the chapter from 2017 to 2021. She is a member of the ACDIS Leadership Council and serves as a mentor. In her director role, she has implemented a data-driven focus for the Novant Health CDE Program, ensuring alignment with the goals of her physician executive leader, Dr. Samara Llewellyn, and the Novant system to improve program performance, quality care, and patient outcomes.

Charles "Chad" Talton, MD, CHCQM, is the Intermountain Health Peaks Region medical director for physician advisors and CDI. He leads a team of 15 physician advisors for Intermountain Health, covering the states of Colorado and Montana, and oversees services provided for utilization review, CDI, and appeals/denials. He has been in this role since June 2023. Previously, he served as a hospitalist for 15 years, which includes his time with Legacy SCL Health in Montana where he was medical director of the hospitalist group at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City and St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. He has been involved in physician advisor work since 2018, with initiatives ranging from status review to ALJ. Additionally, during his time in North Carolina, he served as the chair of family medicine at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Daniel G. VanDerPloeg, MD, completed medical school at the University of Kentucky and general surgery and surgical critical care residencies at the University of Colorado. He is a trauma surgeon at Denver Health, a safety net hospital and level 1 trauma center. He specializes in thoracic surgery and serves in many leadership positions, including associate chair for TACS, thoracic surgery division chief, acting intern course director, and co-director for diversity, equity, and inclusion. He has collaborated on many projects to streamline and increase documentation efficiency, completeness, and accuracy. He also frequently implements AI to assist with clinical documentation in the outpatient setting.

Beth Wolf, MD, CPC, CCDS, is board certified in internal medicine, palliative medicine, and clinical informatics. She spent 20 years at the bedside and 10 years as a CDI physician advisor in a four-hospital healthcare system, serving as the primary liaison to the medical staff on coding and documentation issues. She currently trains physicians on the impact of their documentation and works to improve data reliability and align CDI efforts with physician and system priorities.

Using published studies, the speaker will explain the problems with the frequent misuse of copy and paste as well as the policy his institution implemented. One of the most widely reported statistics is an organization’s mortality rate for the acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) they treat; however, the wide variation in what bedside providers believe constitutes an AMI diagnosis can lead to inaccurate disease reporting. Learn the steps that one CDI program at an academic medical center undertook to achieve significant improvements in their AMI mortality metrics. This session will review why correct AMI capture is so crucial to the hospital, what definitively is and is not an AMI, and how a targeted educational campaign moved the needle.
